tip: mysql rejecting access

problem: mysql rejects access no matter what you do

solution, I think:
shut down mysql

run /usr/bin/safe_mysqld --skip-grant-tables
mysql -u root --host=localhost mysql
UPDATE user SET Password=PASSWORD('mynewpassword') WHERE User='root';
after that
GRANT ALL ON *.* TO user@localhost IDENTIFIED BY "";

seemed to work.
I think it was the host field
