I perservered and eventually got Beagle to work. Unfortunately it chokes on my gigabyte+ of email and causes the machine to swap madly, not to mention the incredible amount of CPU it uses indexing.
It’s ok, it’ll get there. For now I will wait.
edit: hm today it seems to have calmed down. I’ll keep using it and see what happens
